We study the spectrum of singular Sturm-Liouville problems with eigenparameter dependent boundary conditions and its approximation with eigenvalues from a sequence of regular problems.     

A superconvergence result of the natural convection equations

This paper presents a superconvergence result of the stationary natural convection equations. The superconvergence result is obtained by applying a coarse mesh projection for finite element approximation. This projection method is actually a postprocessing procedure that constructs a new approximation based on a high order polynomial on coarse mesh, under some regularity assumption. Finally, numerical experiment is presented for testing, which confirms the theoretic analysis. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Gröbner-Shirshov basis for degenerate Ringel-Hall algebras of type <Emphasis Type="Italic">F</Emphasis><Subscript>4</Subscript>

In this paper, by using the Frobenius morphism and the multiplication formulas of the generic extension monoid algebra, the authors first give a presentation of the degenerate Ringel-Hall algebra, and then construct the Gröbner-Shirshov basis for degenerate Ringel-Hall algebras of type F ₄.     

Crystallization behavior and electroactive properties of PVDF,P(VDF-TrFE) and their blend films

PVDF, poly(vinylidene fluoride), as a semi-crystalline polymer, has interesting electroactive properties but usual melt and solution processing techniques result in its thermodynamically favored non-polar α-phase. By comparison, poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE), PT for short, directly crystallizes in the polar β-phase under the same conditions as PVDF. In this study, blend thin films comprising PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) were prepared by solvent casting method. The difference in the crystallization behavior is comprehensively investigated between the polymers: PVDF, P(VDF-TrFE), and the resulting blend films. It is found that replacement of the fluoride atom in TrFE monomer induces a strong steric hindrance that may alter the crystallization process to become more favorable for nucleation of the PVDF β-phase. To figure out the effect of TrFE content on the crystallization behavior and electroactive properties, films with different blend ratios of PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) were prepared. We found that the PVDF films exhibit higher crystallization activation energy (ΔE) as PT content increases. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) in the piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) mode illustrated that P5T5 films with equal contents of PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) induced the highest d₃₃ values.

On the determinant evaluation of quasi penta-diagonal matrices and quasi penta-diagonal Toeplitz matrices

Recently, three computational algorithms for evaluating the determinant of quasi penta-diagonal matrices have been proposed by El-Mikkawy and Rahmo (Comput Math Appl 59:1386–1396, 2010), by Neossi Nguetchue and Abelman (Appl Math Comput 203:629–634, 2008), and by Jia et al. (Int J Comput Math 89:851–860, 2013), respectively. In the current paper, two novel algorithms with less computational costs are proposed for the determinant evaluation of general quasi penta-diagonal matrices and quasi penta-diagonal Toeplitz matrices. Furthermore, three numerical experiments are given to show the performance of our algorithms. All of the numerical computations were performed on a computer with aid of programs written in MATLAB.     

Numerical study of random lasing in three dimensional amplifying disordered media

In this paper, the lasing action in three-dimensional active random systems has been numerically investigated. Here, random systems of spherical dielectric particles imbedded in an active medium are considered. The quasi steady state approximation for the population inversion of the active medium is applied to solve three dimensional governing equations. Results show that when the density of particles increases to an upper limit, the intensity of lasing modes is enhanced. Also, the effects of pumping rate and particle size on the number of lasing modes and their intensity are studied. Lasing threshold of laser modes in different disordered systems is calculated and it is shown that by an appropriate selection of the central frequency of gain line-shape, the output power intensity of random lasers increases. These results are in agreement with the experimental results observed by others.     

Permanence for General Nonautonomous Impulsive Population Systems of Functional Differential Equations and Its Applications

In this paper, we investigate general impulsive nonautonomous population dynamical systems of functional differential equations. By utilizing the method of multiple Liapunov-like functionals to construct the permanence region, a general criterion on the permanence for the system is established. Furthermore, as applications of this general criterion, a class of impulsive nonautonomous n-species Lotka–Volterra competitive systems with delays and a class of impulsive nonautonomous 3-species Lotka–Volterra food chain systems with delays are discussed. Some new and useful sufficient conditions on the permanence for these systems are established.     

A non‐autonomous epidemic model with time delay and vaccination

In this paper, a non‐autonomous SIRVS epidemic model with time delay and vaccination is investigated. We assume that the vaccinated have a constant immunity period. Some new threshold conditions are obtained. These threshold conditions govern the extinction and permanence of the disease. When the model degenerates into the periodic or autonomous case, the corresponding basic reproduction number can be derived from these threshold conditions. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
